At Our Core

We support the efforts of athletic department leaders who strive to keep the well-being of student -athletes and staff at the forefront of all they do. We accomplish this through the generation, translation, and application of research from across disciplines to immediately address operational needs that often go unaddressed.

How We Can Help

We are the only interdisciplinary group in the market generating evidence-based plug-and-play solutions focused on the issues that affect under-resourced athletic departments’ student-athletes and staff

About us

Established in 2020, the Institute for Athlete Well-Being and Athletic Leadership grew out of an informal group of faculty and staff at the State University of New York-College at Cortland who had begun meeting to discuss their work related to NCAA DIII student athletes and athletics staff. The group consisting of an assistant coach and faculty in health, sport management, athletic training, and sports psychology saw the need to create an interdisciplinary collaborative entity to fill the gaps in research, programs, and resources specifically focused on NCAA DIII.

In 2022 the Institute held the first annual symposium on student-athlete well-being, focusing on best practices for athletic leaders in Division III athletics. Subsequent symposiums have focused on life after athletics and related topics, bringing together current and former student athletes, staff, and athletic administrators to discuss the impact of current research on Division III athletics.
